Howler Pro App Reviews
This is a wonderful timer with lots of fun personality. It has features that I can’t get on any other timer: Ability to set multiple timers at once, save preset timers, set a timer to repeat ad infinitum or just howl one time, set countdowns to tell you when you have ten seconds to go, set howler to automatically reset after timer finishes or even start another pre-set timer. This is great for running circuits on workouts, and good for timing any task. Plus I was able to go into the package contents and add my own sounds into the “resources” folder to increase my sound options. Anyway, I love this app, makes working out fun, with animals sounding out my little successes. Thank you to developer(s)!
Ive used Howler (the free version) every day at work for a few years now. I love that it lets me set multiple timers, either as a countdown, or to a specific time. (I mostly use it to set timers that alert about 2 minutes before a meeting starts at work.) So while the Free version is all Ive needed so far, I thought $2 (or whatever Apple passes on) is a small price to pay to say "thanks" to the developer for this excellent app. The sounds that come with it are silly but you can set it to your own sounds. For me, the biggest help is that it pops the window to the foreground when the timer goes off, letting me know its time to get to my next meeting. The best apps are ones developers write to fill a need they face personally, and thats exactly what this is - not some slick thing trying to compete with all the other overpriced apps in the store, but an inexpensive, solid little app that gets the job done.
I loved the free version of this timer when it first came out. The clean look is classy, but the howl makes it fun. I use it every day and was excited to learn there is a new "Pro" version. I think the full-screen option is worth the price itself! I love that I can just glance at the screen to know how much time is left without having to walk over to the computer and look at the small window. Also, the silent mode is a great option when Im in my office and dont want to "howl" my coworkers, and the pre-set options are addictive. This is a great timer with many many uses and the Howler Pro features are definitely worth the upgrade.
This app is a timer on steroids. It does so many useful things that you would have never even considered in a timer app. Its awesome! The full screen mode is very handy while cooking and the presets make it really easy to start a timer with just the right amount of time. The ability to chain timers together is also great. The "howling" noise is a fun addition and one future feature that could be added is to change the sound per timer (you can already change the default "howl" to any .wav file of your choice, but its a global setting). Overall, its a surprisingly useful app that you will love!
The app works well. I only wish that I could set a custom sound for individual howlers, rather than just one global custom sound. If I could do that, Id give it the 5th star.
Confusing
Works well, but is a bit confusing at first and there are no instructions. I had to edit permissions for the app to change the default presets.
I have tried numerous timers over the years and this is the best I have found. I use it all the time and I like the countdown feature. Doesnt get much better than this. Fantastic customer support. I had a question and it was replied to with in an hour. Thanks to the developer for a great app.
+1 Its pretty good and easy to use +1 The price is right +1 You can change the sounds -1 There is no option to select some of the default system sounds (basso, blow, bottle, frog, etc) -1 If you choose the preference "mut all sounds" the option to "keep growling" also disappears -1 Effectively that means there isnt an option to ONLY notify via Growl / Visually and without sounds -1 The timer will close if you press cmd+w. I would like to see an option to protect the timer from closing / just make cmd+w hide the timer, or at least a confirmation "are you sure you want to close this active timer?"
First off, the timing is slower then a real clock. I find it to be off 2 or 3 seconds off by the end of every minute. Also, for "looping", the time does not automatically start, as the option shows. It waits a couple of seconds then it will loop the timer. If you dont mind loosing seconds, then go ahead and download this crap.
I really love using this app. I am currently studying for an exam and I always time myself with using this app One think I want this app to be updated, is that when I stop the timer, it resets the Elapsed time to 0:00. but I really want to keep the Elapsed time without reseting it, so if I re-start the timer, the elapsed time keeps running from the previous time, not from the 0:00 Thank you for the great app tho!!
Ive played with a few timer apps & widgets looking for something easy to use & keyboard friendly. This app has quick access to the options panel & tabs through most of the normal user-definable fields. Im happy with this get-things-done utility.
Its an alright app, but it removed the seconds display that I needed on the menu bar if its over a minute even though it says that if you upgrade to pro, you get seconds on the menu bar. Misleading... Dont know why the creator removed this and didnt allow an option to turn it back on. Also, the ap needs an option to minimize to the menu bar. I dont like that it minimizes to the dock. Other applications like this (Flux, Cinch, etc.), have options to display the timer in the menu bar. If youre a perfectionist, and you like to command + tab to switch between windows it gets annoying that the timer is in that display. If the creator can enable these two options, then Ill give it 5/5. Otherwise, its a no frills timer and it does what it is supposed to.
I was looking for an app with both timer and stopwatch functions, and this is perfect! You have a bunch of options with size and sounds, and you can have several going at once. There is also a save option so you can use your most frequent timers and alarms easily and quickly. Something that surprised me: There are temperature and weight/measure converters. Im not sure how they figure in to a timer app, but theyve been quite useful so Im not complaining! For $0.99, its a great little tool for productivity!
Just bought this app. It is very easy to use, allows you to configure the sounds and has a quick time input screen. I am very happy with this simple yet effective timer.
i use it all the time and for many reasons.
it has everything i need and operates just the way i want.
I teach in a rural remote school in the interior of Alaska. Wolves and Ravens are common animals in our area. My kids BEG for me to time them using the Howler Timer app. Its easy to use and opens quickly. Great idea for alarm sounds! My students and I love it.
Ive only been using Howler Pro for a couple days, but in general it works quite well for me. Has countdown timers, alarm and stopwatches (though you cant save a stopwatch as a preset for some reason or create one directly--you have to create a timer and then switch it to be a stopwatch, which makes little sense to me). However, there is one *major* flaw to the app that causes me to dock it 2 stars: if you stop a timer, then when you start it again, the timer is now forevermore a timer for only the remaining time. This becomes a big problem if you have, say a 10-minute countdown timer that repeats (so that after it goes off it will start again automatically). If you stop that timer with 7 minutes left, then when you resume it, it will now be a 7 minute timer. This means that when it goes off, you might reasonably expect it to start counting down 10 minutes again, but instead it will only count down 7 minutes over and over. There doesnt appear to be any way to change this behavior, so I now need to remember when Ive paused a repeating timer, because when it goes off, Ill have to fix it manually. I cant think of why anybody would want a timer to behave this way, but at the very least there should be the *option* to have it act like pausing any other timer in the world.
Positively the easiest timer to use that Ive encountered in 25 years of using Macs. Im no longer young, however, and the wolf and crow sounds that are used for alarms dont delight me and cant be heard from the kitchen. I have added a host of other, more usable alarm sounds to my system and use those instead.
I would have rated at 5 stars if it weren’t for 2 issues: 1) In Yosemite the darker menubar option results in not being able to see the countdown numbers, (except in the last 10 seconds when they turn red). 2) If one runs out to get the mail (for example) and a timer goes off, when you come back to your mac you will have no way of knowing. This is because the howler window will not pop up from being minimized or hidden when a timer finishes. This is using OSX Yosemite. The only way to counter this is to set the howler to continue howling, which in some enviroments is not a good idea. I wanted to like this app but the 2 flaws are substantial…...
Awesome
Best Timer App Ever! Works So Good!, Although i would love to see a wigit timer in this app also that would be nice!
Love it!
It's a great timer, and my students love it.
Howler is a lifesaver!
This app really helps me stay focused on intensive work/writing tasks. I use the Pomodoro method (25 minutes on; 5 minutes break) to help me stay productive so I can get through long stretches of deep-focus work. It's a very simple app that does so much!
Best Pomodoro App
I've been using Howler for years. You can customize timers... you can have it silently pop up on your screen... great for remembering to take breaks while working.
User Friendly
Easy to use. Has various alert sounds. Sits in any position on your computer
LOVE THIS GUY
Honestly this has been the one ap ive kept for a least a decade. it simply intuaitive and i love that howl. i am getting the pro version because its been 10 years and well its a small thank you to the crew who built it.
Easy to use timer, displays closest alarm in the menubar
2023 November- I've played with a few timer apps & widgets looking for something easy to use & keyboard friendly. This app has quick access to the options panel & tabs through most of the normal user-definable fields. I'm happy with this get-things-done utility.
Very useful
I use Howler Pro every day, it helps me keep track of work tasks that are each timed, Howler Pro lets me make preset timers each with their own alarm noise, so I know which timer has run out.
Simple and effective
Does just what you'd expect a time to do. I'm very satisfied.
A GREAT TIMER
A great timer for reminding me to get up from the computer periodically and stand. Improvements would be to add more notifications, i.e. comical voice-overs, calming music, harsh voice reminders as a snooze feature when one ignores, etc.
all you need/mac...
more simplicity is needed today... howler got it right!
Works Great; Fun Sounds
This is anything but boring. I've used it for seminars that I've conducted and it always gets the room's attention, usually with a smile.
Perfect!
I used the free version of Howler Pro for almost a year and finally decided that I wanted to thank the makers of this wonderful by at least paying the small amount they ask for. The paid version offers some useful extras, yet I'll never change the howl, nor can I hear living crows without smiling at "the silent howl." I've always loved crows so they are truly a bonus countdown...and of course in real life as well! You won't be disappointed especially since you have 14 other sound options for both the wolf & crow, including music riffs and a simple ting. If you're like me, this alarm will make long work hours more fun.
I find myself using this app all the time
I've had the app for quite awhile and it's by far the easiest most stright forward timer with hours, minutes and seconds. The crows and wolf howl are somehow both more attention catching and less annoying than thye sounds available with other timers. If it went away I would be very inconvenienced.
Handy Timer App but...
I would like the ability to choose a specific alarm time. If it's 2:12 pm and I want a Howler to remind me to do something at 4:30 pm then I have to first figure out how many hours/minutes until that time before I can set the Howler. It's somewhat useful the way it is but could be made so much better with the ability to choose a specific time.
Have used for 5 years- love this app!
Simple and reliable and intuitive to use. Love it!
Wonderful Timer!
I've been using this for years. It's become an essential program for me.
love this timer
Living in the woods this is the appropriate timer. I use to set breaks from my daily drawing work. Use it to time screen viewing time. Use it to time bread raising time. Very useful and enjoyable. It also will loop to reset for stretching breaks
Nice Sound
Nice Sound but not near loud enough
Been using it since Snow Leopard
Works great!
Helps keep the wolves of distraction at bay
I've used this simple and effective timer for years to keep myself on point. The countdown clock sits in the menu bar for at-a-glance reference or it can be enlarged to fullscreen for times when I'm working across the room from my laptop. The sound settings can be customized, but I have a deep respect for the default sounds. The crows start to gather in the distance as the countdown approaches zero. Then the wolf howls at the moon. I am left to consider: Am I on the right path or does the danger draw near?
One chance on alarm
So this app has 15 sounds to choose from for a countdown sound (you don't have to use this funciton) and the alarm sound. The bad thing about the alarm sound that you choose is that the sound only sounds once; one ting sound, one funk sound, one frog sound etc. That's it. If you step away for just a moment, you will miss that one time it alarmed. A proper alarm, for example, should go "ting, ting, ting, ting" until you shut it off. With this app, it just goes, "ting" then it's done. Stupid.
Amazing, loyal user for many years!!!
So simple yet so effective. Used for years with zero issues and is one of the very first apps I download to a new computer. I have challenges with executive functioning and it helps a lot to be able to chain and loop timers. I also like the options to set an infinite howl until I stop it. Having a loud, unmistakeable sound among all the myriad beeps our devices barrage us with is great. The ten second warning is also nice. I haven't messed around with the other sounds much, usually use the default howls, except when I need less obtrusive sound to mark the passage of time. For the modest price I paid, the Pro version is totally worth it. Plus, I occasionally get chuckles from colleagues when the wolves start howling!
Basic but useful
A little basic and lacking in style but easy to use with enough added functionality. In short, does what it says on the box.
Simple and Fun
Sometimes the simplest things are the best. This timer is simple, useful, and really fun.
I love this app
I love this app. Please update the icon for Big Sur :)
very usefule timer
Very simple and easy to use. Does a great job.
Excellent timer
Howler pro is great. I like being able to set the timer, OR set a recurring timer OR set a timer that triggers another timer. Each timer can be named so you know which timer is complete. Also, i like the built in noises, ranging from standard beeps, to howls, to Mac noises like 'Glass", etc. It also integrates very well into the Mac. It works flawlessly and puts to shme the other 4 timers I tried.
When you don't want to take your hands off the keyboard...
When you don't want to take your hands off the keyboard to set up timer on iPhone or Watch, this puppy (wolf) is there to help.
Stopwatch
Yay, they have a stopwatch.
Exellent
very helpful utility
Excellent timer
Love the sound choices
Fun but some clunks
easy to overwrite presets have had to quit and restart at times
As many timers as you need!
I do a lot of time dependent things and this timer app is fantastic at keeping my critical time tasks on track! I paid because they deserve the money for this one!!!
Absolutely wonderful
The app is very easy to use. I use it for timers that repeat every 45 minutes. The app reminds me right on time and continues to "alarm / howl" so I do not miss the reminder. Excellent.
Howler Pro
This is a "cute" application that allows you to keep track of time event. I used so I can do the wash and do my computer work at the same time. It ends with a wolf's howl. How cute is that! BTW, it has several preset buttons to save different times settings.
Nice app, but a couple of suggestions
In general, I’m pleased with Howler Pro. It does just what I want it to. A couple of requests that I’m sure you’ve heard before… 1.) Let me create timers from the mnu bar icon. 2. Let me hide the dock icon. Thanks!
GOOGLE ANALYTICS
I PAID FOR THIS APP, WHY ARE YOU SENDING MY DATA TO GOOGLE ANALYTICS Seriously? Allow the option to remove the dock icon for menubar only functionality!
The least bad of the timer apps, but needs work.
Simple timer that works as expected. It’s incredibly annoying that I can’t click on the menu bar icon to create a new timer (you have to select an item from the app’s menu to do that. Clicking the menu-bar icon brings up the app menu, but forcing me to then select something from that menu is annoying busy work. Also, the timer window can be minimized, but given that the remaining time is visible on the menu bar, I’d as soon that the widow goes away entirely once the timer starts. A click on the menu-bar item could bring it back.
Simple app, fun to use
I’ve used the free version for a while. Recently re-imaged my computer and needed to re-install it and then i saw the Pro version. I bought it because i want to support the dev. OWWWWWWWW
